ASTRA CONFERENCE 2026
Shumpei Ishikawa
Invited Speaker, The University of Tokyo
Shumpei Ishikawa, MD, PhD, is Professor in the Department of Hygiene and Preventive Medicine, Graduate School of Medicine, The University of Tokyo, and also serves as a laboratory head at the National Cancer Center Japan. He received his MD and PhD from The University of Tokyo, where he trained in pathology and cancer genomics. His research focuses on cancer genomics, computational pathology, spatial omics, and the development of artificial intelligence approaches for understanding tumor biology and improving pathological diagnosis.
Dr. Ishikawa has made major contributions to the genomic analysis of gastric cancer, including studies on copy number alterations, RHOA mutations, and molecular features associated with the East Asian gastric cancer burden. His current work integrates whole-slide histopathology images, cancer genomes, spatial transcriptomics, and multiplex immunohistochemistry to build interpretable foundation models for pathology. He is particularly interested in extracting biologically meaningful information from routine hematoxylin and eosin images and translating these approaches into robust tools that can be used across institutions and countries, including resource-limited settings. Through international collaborations, he also works on computational pathology and cancer research platforms for global health and universal health coverage.
